Wondai real estate: timber-town character north of Kingaroy

2 min read

Wondai is on the Bunya Highway, about 25 km north of Kingaroy and 230 km north-west of Brisbane. Around 2,100 people live here, in cattle and grain country with a working hardwood timber industry (South Burnett Rail Trail). The name is believed to come from the Wakka Wakka language, most often given as the word for dingo. That's why two dingo sculptures sit at the roundabout.

What the market has been doing

The Wondai median house price was $492,500 over the 12 months to June 2026 (YIP/CoreLogic). It's lower than Kingaroy's, so buyers who don't mind a 25 km drive to the bigger centre often get more house or more land for their money.

Living here

Wondai has the South Burnett Timber Industry Museum at 80 Haly Street, opened in 2001, with a restored bullock wagon and a woodcrafters' workshop. The Wondai Regional Art Gallery is in the old Station Master's House at 40 Haly Street, with free entry and new exhibitions every month (South Burnett Regional Council). Mountain bike trails sit right next to town, with an entrance off the rail trail. The sealed rail trail also links Wondai with Tingoora and Kingaroy.

Homes and land

Wondai covers a fair range. My sold listings here include a 1,012 m² town block on Bailey Street, a 2,023 m² block on McCord Street, and 3,035 m² on Scott Street. Further out, there were blocks of around 1 hectare on Hines Road and Amaroo Drive. I have another Hines Road property listed now.

Those larger blocks on the edge of town are a big part of Wondai's appeal. You get room for a shed, a few animals, or a big garden, with the town a short drive away.

If you're buying

Work out how often you'll be driving to Kingaroy for work or shopping, then test it at peak times. Check internet at the actual address, and look at water and septic on any block outside the town sewer.

If you're selling

Wondai buyers compare closely with Kingaroy prices, so present your home well and price it against recent local sales, not town-wide medians. My $0 up-front marketing offer is open to the first 10 homeowners who list with me this spring.
