Yarraman real estate: where the South Burnett meets the Darling Downs
Yarraman sits at the junction of the D'Aguilar and New England highways. It's officially in the Toowoomba Region, but it's often counted as part of the South Burnett because of its history, its timber, and its links with Nanango and Blackbutt. Buyers who look at one usualy look at the others.
A bit of history
Yarraman began in the late 1870s as a stockmen's camping and cattle-trading place on Yarraman Creek. The name means "horse" in Port Jackson Pidgin English, and Aboriginal stockmen used the word too (Queensland Places, State Library of Queensland). Timber built the town. There were big pine reserves and a sawmill, and the railway arrived in 1913.
That railway is now the northern end of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail. Australia's longest rail trail, at 161 km, runs from Yarraman down to Wulkuraka near Ipswich. The trailhead is at Yarraman Station Park, the old station building is at the Heritage House Museum, and Yarraman Weir, about 500 m away, has camping for trail users (Department of Transport and Main Roads). It's 19 km by trail to Blackbutt.
Living here
Yarraman is a small town with highway access in two directions. The New England Highway heads south to Toowoomba, and the D'Aguilar Highway heads east towards Brisbane and north to Nanango and Kingaroy. That makes it practical for people who work across the region.
Homes and land
Yarraman has older timber homes on town blocks, plus acreage around the edges. I currently have a property listed on Juillerat Street, on an 883 m² block.
As with any regional town, look at the house itself before the price. Check the roof, the stumps, the wiring, and the water.
If you're buying
Test the drive to wherever you'll work, whether that's Toowoomba, Nanango, or Kingaroy. Check internet at the address, and get a building and pest inspection. Older timber homes deserve a careful one.
If you're selling
Yarraman draws buyers from the Darling Downs, the South Burnett, and Brisbane. Price it against recent local sales, present it well, and mention the rail trail. My $0 up-front marketing offer is open to the first 10 homeowners who list with me this spring.
